An Active Armed Offender is defined as an armed offender who is actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people and who demonstrated their intention to continue to do so while having access to additional potential victims.
Because active armed offender incidents are dynamic and unpredictable, owners and operators of businesses cannot implement a single best practice in their plans, arrangements, and training activities.
The primary objective of any initial response planning should be to minimise the offender’s access to victims.
Therefore, businesses should develop and practice strategies to evacuate people and isolate the offender.

A group of staff, along with an out of town crew, recently undertook a very successful 1C upgrade course. For those not aware, this course permits the guard to perform cash handling and other more sensitive security operations that can't be legally performed by a regular security guard. The course, which runs for 4 days and requires Police approval, means that regardless of whether it's a one-off or a regular tranfer, our patrol and CIT teams can handle the job.
The course also covers spatial awareness and other functions which has significantly improved our patrol car performance capabilities. Courses such as this are hard to come by but worth the signifacnt cost and time to upgrade the skills of our frontline staff. Hopefully sometime in the near future the remainder of our staff will also have the benefit of such a course.
I believe that training such as this should be mandatory for all guards.
