So, you want to be a security guard!

Security can be a rewarding career for the right person. You will either love it and do it foreever, or throw in the towel after a few weeks and never go back. Like all industries there are good and bad employers, and this can determine wether or not you choose to stay in the industry. 

The industry will provide many opportunities to those who self educate and participate in industry discussions.

STEP 1

You will need to pay attention to matters such as;

• Visa Requirements (if from overseas)
• Criminal History
• Language capability 
• Your personal skill level

 

STEP 2

Next I would suggest looking up a industry website (https://www.asial.com.au/ or https://spaal.com.au/) and reading up on what they say.

 

STEP 3

• Complete a Certificate II in Security Operations Certficate. Contact you state licencing body for a list of approved trainers. Do not cheat because it will cost when you get caught. Course is 2-3 Weeks face to face.
• Complete a First Aid Certificate if you haven't got one or one is not included in the course. 

Recommended additional training

• RSA Certificate
• Contractor Safety Industion Card  (Can be done online)
• Working with Childrens Check.

STEP 4

Submit your paperwork etc and your hard earned cash to the licencing body and wait. Application times can be from 2 weeks onwards depending on a large number of factors. Your licencing body will indicate to approximate waiting time at the time of lodgment. 

You may be required to supply finger prints ect as part of the application process.

STEP 5

Get you plastic and away you go. This gets you in the door. The rest is up to you.
